Industrie 4.0 was born from an initiative of the German Government in order to respond to the rise of international competition, and in particular Chinese, in the field of manufacturing industry.

  • 2011 | The term Industrie 4.0 was launched for the first time at the Hanover Fair.
  • 2012 | Creation of an Industrie 4.0 study Group  for the development of recommendations.
  • 2013 | Presentation by the study Group of the final report on the recommendations for the implementation of Industrie 4.0 in enterprises.
  • 2013 | Launch of the German Industry 4.0 platform under the direction of the federal departments BMWi and BMBF.

Since 2013, multiple Industrie 4.0 initiatives have been launched worldwide; In the USA, France, Italy, UK, China, Japan, Switzerland, etc.

Germany is also the first country to implement an industrial approach of the connected factory or Smart factory, based on the concept of Industrie 4.0. Germany is well off to become the world's leading industrial leader for the next few decades.

Over the past 30 years, the evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has led to a radical transformation of the world in which we live and work. The ensuing impact is comparable to the advent of mechanization and electricity during the 1.0 and 2.0 industrial revolutions. The rapid and growing digititalisation of the economy and society in recent years has been a great indicator for the manufacturing industry. The industrial digititalisation conveyed by Indsutrie 4.0 is on the way to radically change the future of manufacturing enterprises and by rebound, business models.


One of the foundations of the Industrie 4.0 concept is the integration, automation and interconnection of objects (IoT), services (IoS) and people (IoP) towards more digital intelligence, more data, more information, more communication and more mobility. This advanced intelligence generates an astronomical quantity of data, represents an invaluable value for enterprises. Its processing by the Big Data, will enable enterprises to have information in real time, enabling them to take immediate operational and strategic decisions. More and more intelligent systems composed of multi-site equipment, machines and objects allow for the implementation of self-managed production processes and auto-learner marketing processes. In the world of Industrie 4.0, people (IoP), objects (IoT), services (IoS) communicate with products (Smart Product) and cooperate directly, with each other, in an intelligent systemic environment.


The processes of production (vertical) and those of the chain of value creation (horizontal) become increasingly intelligent and are increasingly integrated to each other, far beyond the borders of the enterprise. This is to be able to produce individualised products, in LOT 1, at the same cost as a mass production. The ultimate goal of an Industrie 4.0 concept is to set up enterprises whose intra-and extra-muros organisations are increasingly efficient and whose operations are increasingly flexible, increasingly faster with low operating costs. The processes are controlled, monitored, self-regulated and self-learner, with a view to get a continuous and maximum optimization, thereby saving financail, human and energy resources.


Value-creation chains which also include all phases of a Product Life Management (PLM) have been completely redesigned, in terms of integration and intelligence. In this way, enterprises, have the ability to respond in a perfectly personalized way to customer's demands and requirements. At any time, for all phases of PLM, from innovation or the idea of the initial product, through development, simulation, industrialisation, production, use, maintenance to the recycling of the product, changes can intervene. In other words, at any time, all the needs, and requirements of the customers or all the players belonging to the value chain are taken into account by the ecosystem.
