The Industry 4.0 is where the physical and virtual worlds converge. The purpose of an Industry 4.0 concept is to continually push the efficiency of a company to its limits so that it can remain competitive in the long term.

 

Germany has understood before all other countries that the sharp rise in digitalisation, in various economic sectors, could also be used for industrial purposes. Certainly, the Industry 4.0 challenge bar launched in 2011, has been placed very high but this is the price that Germany is willing to pay to regain a decisive competitive advantage in the long term. The introduction of digitalisation in enterprises represents a real industrial revolution and a social revolution.

 

In reference to the graph shown on the left, the central part represents the fundamental components that an Industry 4.0 concept consists of. Enterprises of the future create "intelligent" ecosystems that give the customer the opportunity to communicate and self-manage with the systems that have enabled the creation, production and marketing of the purchased product. To create these ecosystems, companies need to:

 

  • Amplify the interconnection of Objects (IoT), People (IoP) and Services (IoS)
  • Intensify the integration and automation of processes and services
  • Push the integration of systems and people, beyond the borders of enterprises
  • Make more intelligent: objects, machines, systems, production, energies, buildings, products, etc.
  • Digitalise the end-to-end ecosystem
  • Make information and communications available and accessible anywhere in real time
  • Process enterprise data by Big Data for analytical, learner and predictive purposes
